tune therapy

Ok, so I thought I was done posting for the day, but as the first 'day off' of the tour draws to a close, I've found myself sitting calmly on the bus with my in-ear-monitors in my ears reading some blogs and listening to Glen Phillips on my iPod... his voice and songs are like a rare late night conversation with old friend. I miss my family so much it hurts--even after only 5 days on the road--so I wheel over to Michael Buble's 'Home' for some therapy. I listen to 'The Scientist' once or twice to remind myself just how deep a person can dive into a 4-minute song, maybe check out my brother's 'Head High' just for a dose of what I might call high art in rock music--the instrumental outro of that tune is three times as long as the lyric and I could write paragraphs about what I think its saying...

Anyway, music's great, isn't it? nothing else like it. Take some time this week... get a few recordings that push your buttons and join me in some tune therapy.

I have a t-shirt that reads "Music Saved My Life"...and I can't tell you how many times I've thought that to be so true. You know I'm a firm believer in music connecting people from every walk of life. There is a commonality that is definitely real. Part of my connection with MSC and my friends I've made there.

So, nothing new that you and I haven't talked about before. Just wanted to stay in touch while you're away, and let you know how many of us are thinking of you and praying for you. Are you sure you can't get the bus to come all the way here to St. Louis at the end of the tour?

I second Mark's endorsement of Autovein's "Head High." Their "Dreamer Dies," too. Seriously.

Mark, I agree with Lisa E's shirt, music does save lives. Your music is so wonderful and up lifting (and please do not take this as me kissing up, its me BEING). Your music has traveled thoughout my circle of family and friends, from Salt Lake City, UT to Punxatawney, PA. Everyone that I have shared your music with, wishes you and the band could visit their home towns due to the powerful worship it entails.

Also, I totally agree with you when you say that music is therapy. Music that lifts you up when you are down, calms you down when you are outragged, music that takes you to a peaceful place when needed, etc. Music is awsome!!!

I turned off the radio in the car tonight thinking I needed to feel the freedom of silence. I didn't last 2 miles before I was singing my heart out. And, of all things, I was singing hymns. Good old fashion, never-to-be-heard-at-MSC hymns. Old Rugged Cross, What a Friend We Have in Jesus, Victory in Jesus. So your post is making me ask why. I guess partly it's nostalgic - takes me to a time when life was simple. I definitely need that. But there is such truth in some of those hymns. And when I sing Jesus Loves Me to Jacob I always think, If that's all you get from me, little man, I want that to be it. That Jesus loves you, that the Bible tells you, and that He is strong. Simple truth. That's what gets me about music. Complexity made simple. You ARE. All I can do is surrender. Amazing grace. But spoken doesn't do it. It's gotta be sung. Not that I could ever go back to singing hymns in church, there's something to be said for hearing another's experience with the Creator through the intimacy of music. Maybe that's why Foundations speaks so loudly to people...
Anyway, just had to stay up late tonight and catch up with you. We moved to our new house this weekend and it's been great. Crazy, but great. 5 minutes from church! Whoo hoo!
